Both students and staff get excited each year for winter break, and once it ends, a new year will have begun, but does it ever feel that way? Is New Year’s overrated? The idea of celebrating the New Year sounds exciting, and it is a cool concept, but there’s a lot of factors leading to the possibility of the holiday being overhyped, at least from a kid’s perspective. The celebration doesn’t start until later in the day, and once midnight hits, nothing actually changes except the date.
People usually celebrate by having big parties, but not everyone is able to do so. My friends are always with their families, so I stay home with mine, and we really don’t do much. The New Year really doesn’t change much, and I believe people don’t need to change once the year does. “New year, new me” is ridiculous, along with setting goals, because no one ever follows through with it. The New Year comes by so quickly now, because getting older is realizing life is short, so I genuinely don’t get excited from the New Year anymore, and it just feels like another ordinary day to me.
Salome Swanson agrees, saying “New Year’s is very much so overrated. It’s like a birthday party, you celebrate it but then you wake up the next day and don’t feel any different.” When I mentioned how bad the jokes are, she highly agreed saying “Just stop, they are so overused”. Katelin Vance says, “I think New Years has some interesting qualities. Everyone’s all excited to count down to the new year. Some people even throw huge parties to celebrate New Years. But, once you get to midnight, the clock just switches. It is then a huge letdown from all that hype. You hype it up, and you think something amazing will happen. But, it doesn’t. Then, you’re left tired for multiple days as you get the sleep back that you’ve lost. But, even though New Years can be overrated, those parties can be very fun, because family and friends are there to celebrate with you.”
I took those last few words Katelin had said to heart, and I threw my own party on New Year’s Day this year. I invited all my friends, and though it may not have turned out as I wanted, everyone still had a lot of fun, and in the end, all that mattered was that I got to spend the day celebrating with those I care about most, and I get to share another year with them.
