Staff and students at Capital High School love showing their holiday spirit and have the best ways of doing so. Although it’s fun to celebrate, people definitely have strong opinions on certain ideas, like when to start celebrating, and how long to celebrate for. There have been true arguments over this topic.
The argument is relevant, because there are many mixed thoughts and opinions on the topic of Christmas, and when to celebrate. Some get excited on November 1st, while others spare Thanksgiving first. Another thing is when to put up a Christmas tree, and how long to keep it up, along with other decorations. Each year there are less and less people cutting down a tree, and instead putting up a fake one, so they most likely would put it up earlier. Those who cut down a tree, like my family, usually wait until just after Thanksgiving.
People become really passionate about the topic of Christmas and Thanksgiving, and how- or when they believe the holidays should be celebrated. Some skip right to Christmas once Halloween has ended, while others get angry, defending Thanksgiving. Personally, I celebrated Halloween a little early this year, because I threw a party, so I was feeling done before Halloween had come. Once it passed, I had the Christmas spirit, which made some of my friends extraordinarily angry. My family’s values tie into our holiday traditions, so when celebrating Thanksgiving, it’s kind of the same deal as Christmas, which adds to the excitement and eagerness. I believe celebrating early makes the holidays last longer, and it’s fun that way.
Malakai Burden waits until after Thanksgiving to celebrate Christmas, because after Halloween the season is still fall. Malakai stated that, “They are separate [holidays] for sure, and I think that Thanksgiving, though it may not be as big as Christmas, should still be focused on after Halloween.” I can agree with this opinion, especially the part of it still being fall, but I just want it to be Christmas so early. It upsets me to still see fall decorations, because I love Christmas decorations much more, since they make my soul happy.
Others will always have a different opinion on the topic, which is understandable, but why so passionate? I’ve witnessed true anger from others, and it’s almost humorous. Capital High School is a fun place to celebrate the holidays, and it’s refreshing to see how much people care. Celebrating any holiday can be fun, so why does it matter how or when a person celebrates? Every family is different, and every opinion is different. When it comes to anything, people should be respectful and understanding of others.
