Walking into art class I saw Preston across the room. Preston and his partner were painting a pot that the ceramics class made for them. They were one of several groups, but they seemed to be having the most fun doing it. This is something that I always notice about Preston, he seems to be having fun in any situation.
I started off by asking a few simple questions just to get to know him a little better. Preston has a cat named Gato. His favorite activity outside of school is rock climbing and he usually climbs at Cirque Climbing in Lacey, and if he could travel anywhere in the world he said he would go to Brazil, more specifically Rio de Janeiro. This was surprising to me because I know Preston is a big-time skier, and I assumed he would have chosen a ski destination rather than the beach.
Preston is a very ambitious person, and he is always taking on different projects. His latest is an old Ford truck that he and his dad are restoring. Preston said, “The goal is to have it finished by the end of the summer so we can drive it before I go to college” So far it seems like it will be finished by their goal, because Preston said that the only thing left to do is to put the engine back into it. Preston and his Dad did all of the painting and body work themselves, and decided to paint it baby blue, Which looks very good in my opinion.
Besides working on his truck with his dad, Prestons’ favorite thing to do is skiing. Preston grew up skiing and naturally, he is very good at it. While he has lived in Olympia his main area has been White Pass Ski Area on Highway 12. Preston is going to attend Montana State University in the fall, so he will be able to continue skiing in some high-profile ski areas. When I asked Preston about his goals for college he said “I want to get swole during the week and ski on the weekends.” It’s clear he won’t stop skiing anytime soon. Another college goal for Preston is to land a backflip on his skis.
Fun is one thing that Preston will always be remembered for and it certainly seems as though Preston will continue to have fun in college and in his life beyond. I think we should all live like Preston, and have a little more fun.
