As the spring sports season kicks off at Capital High School the soccer team is gearing up for the new season. After a 3-11-2 season last year, they look to improve with an older core of players. This year’s team strives to reach districts and set a competitive standard to build on for years to come.
It has been a shaky start to the year so far going 1-4 against some of the best teams in the league. Their four losses have come to good opponents, North Thurston, Peninsula, Timberline and Union have been formidable in soccer for years.
Although those games ended in losses, they played the three league opponents (Peninsula, Timberline, and North Thurston) close, losing the three games by a combined 4 goals. They are not far off from winning those games and a win against Aberdeen is a good foundation to build on for the rest of the season.
I spoke with Kaloyan Menser, a senior on the soccer team, for insight on the upcoming season. He stated that he was looking forward to playing with this senior core of players one last time before his time in high school is up. This is a tight-knit senior class that has played together for a long time and clings to each moment they have together.
When asked why the school should be excited about the season, Menser reiterated the value of experience and leadership that comes with an older set of players. The leadership and experience that stems from an older core of players will be pivotal in their hopes to make a run into the playoffs this season.
With just three league games having been played so far there is plenty of time for the team to turn their season around. They are yet to face River Ridge or Yelm who are the other two teams at the bottom of the conference. Those games will be pivotal if the team wants to rise up in the standings.
The soccer team plays games on Tuesday and Thursday each week and usually one of those games will be at home. If you have the time, come on out to some games this year Varsity plays at 7 pm right after JV who starts at 5 pm.
