It seems with every Google image search a few photos that come up as search results are from websites like Shutterstock. While many of these watermarked images may seem like completely normal choices to buy a further investigation will reveal a countless amount of strange, disturbing, and off putting images. Many of these pictures are commissioned for one reason or another but it does not do much to explain away the endless list of hilariously terrible photos.

Many of these photos feature other objects such as a large variety of fruits, vegetables and inanimate objects which sometimes replace a part of the model, usually their head. Some people may consider these avant garde pictures to be a form of art in their own way, due to their sheer creativity and surreal imagery. Many of these photos are strange and offputting scenarios which are hard to be taken seriously. While these photos are often mocked on the internet they are somehow timeless in their own right and just specific enough to not be applicable in any situation without building an entire story around them.

While not all pictures generated by this industry are head scratching, there are more weird examples then you may think. Dennis O’Clair is one of these photographers whose picture of an underwater nun went viral on Buzzfeed’s top 50 weirdest stock photos. He only found out about his pictures popularity after his family sent him an article about it. Dennis was very happy about his pictures success, saying, “The images from this production, including the infamous one, have been licenced hundreds of times and have netted us over 12,000 in income. Take that buzzfeed!”
