Ig Nobles
November 3, 2016
The Ig Nobels are the awards for the most improbable research that you could possibly think of in this world. The awards go to those with the thought to study that which no one wanted to know or never expected to be researched and those who found something in the process in making something people would expect out of them. These award ceremonies are held for the express purpose of entertaining and making people think. The quote that is most expressive of why this group exists is the classic Sherlock Holmes quote, “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” This holds the Ig Nobels right by showing that the research of what seems useless is always important to study for the future. We never know what we might need to save us all. There are a few to talk about if you want to see some of the improbable research that has happened. The Reproduction Prize of 2016, given to the late Ahmed Shafik, for studying the effects of wearing polyester, cotton, or wool trousers on the sex life of rats, and for similar test with human males. The 2013 Peace Prize, a prize about actions that are minimal or non helping made for the goal of peace, given to Alexander Lukashenko for making it illegal to applaud in public, and the Police of Belarus for arresting a onearmed man for applauding. The 2010 Chemistry prize given to Eric Adams of MIT, Scott Socolofsky of Texas A&M University, Stephen Masutani of the University of Hawaii, and British Petroleum, for disproving the old belief that oil and water don’t mix. Remeber that all research can be useful if you tell the right people.
