Capital High School is a great school, but it is not without its flaws. From the bathrooms to the schedules, multiple things must be noted to have a great school year. Starting with the bathrooms, there is currently one universal/gender-neutral bathroom in the school. While I hope that the school makes more in the future, said bathroom is in the main hallway leading to Pod B, the English pod. In addition, there is also a single-use bathroom present in the lecture hall, across from the cafeteria kitchen.
On the topic of lunch, it’s important to understand where you can sit. Whether you have first lunch or second lunch, there are a variety of options for where you can sit. If you don’t have a table to sit at, you’re free to sit against the wall that’s across the vending machines in the commons, or in any of the chairs present in the main area near the compass. There’s also (only one day a week unfortunately) an alternative lunch space that is hosted, which you’ll be able to find more information about in the school or via the school newsletter, assuming they do it next year. This is especially helpful for those of you with sensory issues, such as myself. On the topic of sensory issues, it’s important to know that the library is typically open during assemblies. During this time, the library will present the information that would be otherwise missed if it was an informational assembly.
And while understanding your school is important, it is equally important to understand your Chromebook. There are a couple of stupid things about it that must be known. For example, you have to watch the battery. While you may think that you’ll be notified before it dies, in my experience, it only pops up a notification mere seconds before it dies. The charger also doubles as a standard USB-C charger and typically charges devices much faster than normal chargers. Lastly, the Chromebook also doubles as a tablet, as it features a touch screen, and you can flip the keyboard the opposite way to either stand up the computer or fold and use it as a tablet. During the weekend, the computer will undergo a restart, this happens due to the district therefore it is unavoidable. I recommend you make sure you’re fine with losing any of your active tabs.
As long as you take care in understanding your surroundings, and are kind to others, you’ll have a great time at CHS. It has been a great school for me with the kindest teachers and an extremely accepting environment. And while some things like poor bathroom etiquette or people standing in the middle of hallways can be frustrating, the great parts of the school certainly outweigh the bad.
