Springing into Track:
May 20, 2022
In the springtime, there’s always new opportunities. A lot of people see springtime as that, new awakenings and the chance to start something new. A lot of people spring into something new – whether it be habits, relationships, or just newer things in general. The warmer air and weather inspire people to spring into something new.
That includes sports. Our school offers plenty of sports in the springtime, with a wide variety. Track is one of the most popular ones here, for it being one of the only mixed gender availabilities of the sport offered at Capital. A lot of freshmen do it because of that – and because it’s not all a competitive team sport – you can take it at your own pace.
“I was good at middle school track, why not join this one?” Asher said when I asked him about track. “But, boom, I’m slow and I don’t have any stamina, and I’m not as good as I was in middle school.”
Asher is a freshman – he joined track, his only experience before that being track in middle school. That’s many other people’s experiences as well, with having little to no experience in track – except with exercise in PE, of course. A lot of freshmen, especially ones that had just transferred to Capital at the start of the school year; like Asher did from Vancouver – don’t know as many people. Due to that, he described it as very overwhelming at first, and, thanks to his social anxiety, made him very miserable on the first day of track.
“But luckily, one of the coaches introduced me to an older person – a junior or senior. I realized that one of my friends had been off within the first couple of days, and I made a few other friends within it as well.” Asher said.
Track can be an easy way to get to know people outside of your normal environment, like Asher has – but you can also put in a lot of effort. With school track, you have a variety of options, such as hurdles, long jump, javelina, shot put; but you can always go more simpler. Sprints and distance
Being able to figure out yourself – through the sports you choose with that, or the friends you make through track can help you a lot. A lot of freshmen who do track in their freshman year continue to do it for the rest of their high school years. It’s a good way to get off steam and find your own path through it – metaphorically and literally.
Being able to bloom into what you are is what happens during springtime. Choosing what you want to do in the springtime – whether it be a sport or a secondary after school thing such as theater can be.
