Disney Remakes Lose the Movie’s Original Charm

Disney is a great company, they have risen above it all with excellent storytelling and their fantasy elements, but lately, Disney has been going through a trend of putting their classic stories through a modern filter. Beautifully hand drawn animation to dull realistic computer-generated animation. These rehashes of such amazing works of art often turn out disappointing and lackluster. It has become a popular idea that Disney is running out of ideas.

A prime example of this disappointment of an upcoming movie is the remake of ”The Lion King”, with Computer Generated Images it looks pretty but
lacks any of the amazing colors and splendid character design in favor for a more realistic tune-up.
As Max Hesse Morgan grade 12 stated, “The designs are what really makes the 2d animation timeless if you put a computer generated filter over that, it loses its shine”. This is backed up through shape language,
a way of putting together characters that look unique. If you blacked out
all the Disney princesses anyone would still be able
to see which is which due to shape language. Shape language is what makes characters look like they fit their roles. Take that away and it leaves a horrible mark of not being able to tell who is who and what their role is.

“The Jungle Book” is another example of designs gone wrong, it lost its memorability already with
the FIRST live-action movie remake, what makes Disney think it can try again and succeed? “The Jungle Book”
has had three movies of it and the most likely one that anyone would remember would be the animated version. A user of IMDb gave “The Jungle book” a rating of five out of ten with the reasoning of, “The songs were stupid. Nostalgic? Yes! Brilliant for animated film? 100%! Fit for realistic looking animals? No.” and a few others pertaining to story and actor choice.

The Beast or Prince John doesn’t feel right in the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” movie either, mostly because people grew up with the more fluffy and beastly Beast in the original animated film. One of the biggest reasons why “Beauty and The Beast” became so memorable is due to the animation. Take the dance ‘camera’ sweep sequence, for example, James Baxter the animator of that scene did an amazing job of creating this swoop with the ‘camera’ when it was hand drawn. Using actual cameras it becomes a bit drab, not really worth it because then it feels rocky and artificial. A critic off of Rotten Tomatoes by the name of David Sims stated: “Disney has ripped a jewel out of its casing and set it in something far more elaborate; the effect is garish rather than nostalgic, frustrating rather than memorable.” The story felt mechanical and pushy.

There are a few movies that Disney should absolutely never touch, and that is the golden age of Disney, those would be between 1937 and 1942 some movies included in that roster are; “Snow
White”, “Dumbo”, “Bambi”. Though Dumbo is confirmed to have a live-action remake later this year on March 27th. CGI movies tend to lose fashion quickly with growing technology and 2D animation will never lose
their punch due to its classic style. In conclusion, it is likely we will see a strong return in 2D animation due to the outcries against these rehashes.
