Capital High School library, along with others in the Olympia School District have undergone changes. “The biggest change affects every student in our district is a new program with the public library called MyTRL. Every O.S.D. student has a virtual public library card that allows access to online resources.” Bonds offered some examples of what these online resources are: “Seniors can access an SAT practice test that will help prepare them for the real thing. Sophomores and Juniors can access a practice PSAT test as well. Free audio books and much more will be available.” Bonds also elaborated on some changes that will be implemented as soon as next year. “Check- ing out iPads and Chrome- books to students should be available by next school year.” Bonds also wanted to remind everyone in the school that, “The library is always here to serve staff and students and you can come to us if you need any help.” Many think libraries becoming more digital is a necessary evolution to keep up with the times we are living in. Innovating the way libraries function can also make information more widely accessible to the public. Having books stored online for free can make them available to people who may not have access to physical books. The popular opinion is that public libraries should not be shut down. Globalcitizen.org found that “American communities have a deep love affair with public libraries. 90% of Americans say that the closing of their local public library would have significant impact on their communities.” Libraries are changing in response to the digital age, but whether they are physical or digital they will always be apart of our communities, especially here at Capital.
